Emperor Nero's Golden House was ancient Rome's most extravagant private residence: a 300-room palace with rotating dining rooms, gold-leaf ceilings, rooms inlaid with gems, and frescoed corridors that later inspired Renaissance artists including Raphael (who lowered himself in on ropes to study them). Buried after Nero's death and rediscovered in the 15th century, the complex sits underground beneath the Colle Oppio park near the Colosseum. The guided tour includes a virtual reality experience that reconstructs the opulent interiors over the bare brick vaults, making the contrast between imperial fantasy and archaeological reality visceral. Advance booking and a guide are mandatory; independent visits aren't possible.
