The largest amphitheatre ever built still dominates Rome's skyline nearly 2,000 years after Emperor Vespasian broke ground. The structure held 50,000 spectators for gladiatorial combat and could be flooded for mock naval battles. Today, the underground hypogeum (animal cages and staging tunnels) is open to visitors and offers the most compelling perspective — standing where fighters waited before ascending into the arena. The upper tiers, reopened after decades of restoration, provide sweeping views across the Forum and Palatine Hill. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the travertine facade from grey to warm gold.
