Terme di Caracalla
Built in 216 AD, these monumental public baths once accommodated 1,600 bathers at a time across hot, warm, and cold rooms, plus gymnasiums, libraries, and gardens. The sheer scale of the ruins β towering brick walls reaching 30 metres β gives a visceral sense of imperial Roman ambition that the cramped Forum sometimes fails to convey. Mosaic fragments still cling to the floors and walls. The interactive guide overlays virtual reconstructions onto the ruins through your phone, showing the marble cladding and painted ceilings as they once appeared. In summer, the Rome Opera stages open-air performances among the ruins, creating one of Europe's most dramatic concert settings.
