Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary
Four Republican-era temples dating to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC sit in a sunken piazza that doubles as Rome's most charming cat colony. Around 130 feral cats lounge across ancient columns and crumbling walls in the exact spot where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. The street-level view is free and compelling — ancient ruins with cats draped over every surface. Below, a volunteer-run shelter cares for the colony and welcomes visitors (noon-18:00) to meet the elderly and disabled cats who live permanently inside. It's a uniquely Roman collision of ancient history, animal welfare, and everyday life that no museum can replicate.
