MAXXI - Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo
Zaha Hadid's swooping concrete museum in the Flaminio district is as much about the architecture as the art inside. Inaugurated in 2010, MAXXI's fluid, interconnected galleries flow into each other without traditional walls or rooms, creating a disorienting spatial experience that challenges how you move through exhibitions. The permanent collection spans contemporary art and architecture from Italian and international artists, with rotating exhibitions that tend toward the experimental and thought-provoking. The building itself — all sweeping curves, suspended staircases, and natural light pouring through strip skylights — earned Hadid the RIBA Stirling Prize. After the Baroque and ancient overload of central Rome, MAXXI's radical modernity is a welcome palette cleanser.
