Scuola Gladiatori Roma
On the grounds near the Appian Way, a group of historical re-enactors runs a two-hour gladiator training experience that's far more engaging than it sounds. You dress in a tunic and leather armour, learn sword and shield techniques from instructors who study ancient combat manuals, and face off in choreographed (but surprisingly physical) bouts. The trainers explain the social history of gladiatorial combat: who fought, why, and how the popular image differs from reality. It's one of those activities that sounds gimmicky but consistently earns rave reviews from adults and children alike. Groups are kept small (usually under 20) and the vibe is enthusiastic rather than corny.
