A 36-metre-high Egyptian-style pyramid standing incongruously at a busy intersection in Testaccio, built in 12 BC as the burial tomb of Roman magistrate Caius Cestius. When Egypt was conquered, wealthy Romans briefly went mad for all things Egyptian, and Cestius had this built to guarantee his afterlife in style. The white marble exterior is striking against the Aurelian Walls it's embedded in. The painted interior chamber can be visited on select weekends. It is the kind of thing that makes you stop and question whether you're actually in Rome, which is exactly the delight of it.
