The Janiculum isn't one of Rome's canonical seven hills, but it offers arguably the best unobstructed panorama of the entire city. From the Piazzale Garibaldi terrace, the view sweeps from the Vittoriano monument to St. Peter's dome, with the Alban Hills fading into the distance. Every day at noon, a cannon fires from the hill — a tradition since 1847 that still makes first-time visitors jump. The tree-lined passeggiata up from Trastevere passes the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola (the 'big fountain' from Sorrentino's 'La Grande Bellezza'), puppet shows for children, and busts of Garibaldi's fighters lining the road.
