Castel Gandolfo is the classic lake-and-palace escape from Rome, with a compact historic center overlooking Lake Albano. The appeal comes from the setting as much as the papal history: steep lanes, balconies, and views across volcanic water make it feel more resort-like than urban. Recent public access to the papal villas has given the town another reason to visit, but even a simple stroll through the center is worthwhile. It is especially good when you want a slower, greener day after several packed museum days in Rome.
